THE BIGGER PICTURE
De Gea is thought to be considering his options after spending a year without a club since leaving Manchester United. The Spaniard has teased a return to the game in recent weeks by posting training footage of himself on social media. But he was previously reluctant to take the Saudi Arabia plunge, with longstanding interest from clubs in the super wealthy Gulf nation.

Despite leaving United, De Gea has continued to be based in Greater Manchester, having made his home in the city's affluent southern suburbs for more than a decade. Much of the training footage he has shared took place at Altrincham FC's ground.

WHAT NEXT FOR DE GEA?
Even at the age of 33, De Gea is by no means considered old for a goalkeeper. But if he wants to avoid his career petering out altogether, the former Spain No.1 must invite offers and make a decision sooner rather than later so that he can be at elite level sharpness by the time 2025-26 begins.
